Running with the Guru
Today politics aside! Kenyan politics can drive you crazy. So in the meantime as we wait for Chebukati to do his thing, I found myself in Karura Forest at 6:30am.
I had a running date with Joy D’Souza. Remember last time I told we had a date? I woke up early to prepare on time. I did not want a situation where my ‘celeb’ comes and waits for me. It’s a bad sign also as a learning student. Always wait for the teacher not the other way round.
After some brief greetings and introduction we hit the track! 15km to be precise. I had mixed reactions; I was excited and at the same scared! I thought she was going to pull Hussein Bolt on me! However, she assured me to ease up we are going to run on a slow pace.
We started pretty well at the same pace. You know that feeling like you are singing with Rihana on stage? that exciting feeling…..you know what I mean…..I had butterflies in my stomach!
After 5Km, she started giving me some distance! I tried to maintain and keep up with her but alas! She had more speed and stamina than I. She ran and disappeared in the thin forest. She ran nonstop! Now you know why I need to work on my speed and endurance!
I also discovered today that I need to explore Karura forest more. We followed totally a new route. It was so amazing. The serene was breath taking. The sound of water falls make you feel like you are in wonderland! Remember Alice in Wonderland? Here I am…. The cool morning weather! you only hear the birds chirping, you see gazelles and monkeys jumping around and crossing the road. Everyone minding their own business. Nothing to worry about.
What did I learn today?
- Run with your pace don’t feel pressured when others are ahead of you. At any given time there is someone behind you impressed with your performance.
- Look for running mates to motivate you. It can get boring at times.
- Always time yourself and monitor your progress to help you improve and this motivates you big deal.
- Keep the right spirit and attitude up. It gets tougher with time but don’t give up.
- Ensure you have trendy sexy trainers! They give you the psych and increase your self-esteem!
After some 10km, I bumped into my close pal Waithera Kaigua who is also a good runner and a fitness maniac! She is the one who introduced me to Karura about 3 years ago. She was happy to see her loyal student still doing well. Teachers are always proud of their students when they become successful and progress in life.
As I get motivated by others along the way, I hope am also motivating you. Get out of your comfort zone and do something. Identify a hobby that you are passionate about and pursue it.
Life is more exciting when you spice it up! Strive to live a healthy life. Your body will thank you later!
Have a blissful weekend and stay safe!
